Portugal is where most European brands end up, and for good reasons that are worth stating plainly: it is inside the EU so there is no customs border, the northern region around Porto, Braga and Guimarães has been making garments for decades, and the quality at the top end is genuinely as good as anywhere in the world.

The trade-off is the minimum and the price. Portuguese factories are busy and they know what they are worth, so a run of fifty pieces is often either refused or quoted at a price that makes it pointless. Knitwear and jersey are the strongest categories; woven shirting and technical outerwear are thinner on the ground and often quietly subcontracted.

Lead times are the underrated advantage. Two weeks of road freight from Porto rather than five weeks of sea from Asia is worth more to a small brand than the per-piece difference, because it is the difference between reordering a style that sold and watching the season end without it.
